My Favorite Game - Yang!

I would like to tell you about the game called “Yang”. ยางรัด is the Thai word for rubber band. All you need for this game is maybe 120 rubber bands that you loop together to make one long band. To make it nice and strong, you should loop 2 or 3 rubber bands together. If you do this, your yang will last a long time. I like to play “yang” with my friends here in Thailand.

Kids of all ages love to play this game. This is how the game is played. Two people need to hold the yang while a third person jumps. You jump over the yang for each day of the week, Sunday through Saturday, using the Thai words of course. You start jumping with the yang held close to the ground at feet level, and then you gradually raise the yang up higher and higher until it is at your head. Then you begin the next level at the feet again, but this time you must jump two times successfully. I like to play yang because it is fun to play and I can play almost as well as my Thai friends. It may sound easy, but it really isn’t. And it is really good exercise too.

Blog Readers:

We'll work on this with my kids because it was a great reminder of the exact same game (by a different name) that I used to play as a missionary kid in the Philippines. I bet that your game is familiar to millions of people around the world and it's so simple and inexpensive! How high can you go???

I never knew what this game was called--and I taught at your school in Bangkok for two years! Even though I didn't know what it was called, I learned how to make the rubber band "rope", and I loved watching the kids jump. I was always so amazed that they could get their feet up higher than their heads. I'm glad to know you've learned to play it well.
